What the inspection will not cover
ASHI asks for the predominant material of the water service, distribution and drain-waste-vent pipes to be described. Predominant is an honest word for a house that has been altered more than once, and it is not a complete answer about any single run.

What it is required to cover
InterNACHI requires the location of the main water shut-off and the main fuel shut-off to be described, and whether the supply is public or private. Those are the three lines worth copying out of the report on the day you get it, because nobody looks them up until they are standing in water.

What to do about it
Two categories are worth chasing before you exchange: water somewhere it should not be, and anything the report could not see the end of. Both are open-ended, and open-ended is what moves a price.
